With no club football until August, let’s take a round of the top clubs around Europe and see what they have been up to so far this summer.
Manchester United finally completed the signing of ex-Crystal Palace right back Aaron Wan-Bissaka for a reported 45m pounds with add-ons. Moreover, Marcus Rashford has signed a lucrative contract extension with the club he joined as a kid. Academy graduates Tuanzebe, who impressed as Aston Villa were promoted to the EPL last year, and Andreas Pereira have both signed extensions too.
European Champions Liverpool on the other hand are having a quiet summer, as expected. There is not much improvement that can be made to an already world class team. They did sign one for the future in 17 year old center back Sepp van den Berg, who impressed with PEC Zwolle last year.
In one of the biggest transfer moves in the Premier League so far Tottenham have signed central midfielder Tanguy Ndombele from Olympique Lyonnais. They have also sealed a transfer for Leeds’ Jack Clarke, who will move back on loan right away to Leeds United. The French international and young Englishman are Spurs’ first signing since January 2018 and the former will add some steel to Pochettino’s midfield.
Another team to impress with their transfer moves are Manchester City. They have brought back Angelino from PSV Eindhoven. The left-back was at City before moving to Holland. He will provide cover for Benjamin Mendy. The major signing for Guardiola though is Rodri from Atletico Madrid, who becomes City’s record buy at 70m euros. He is regarded as Fernandinho’s long term replacement.
Arsenal being Arsenal have been quite slow in this window even though they finished fifth last season. Their only signing is young Brazilian forward Gabriel Martinelli. The 18 year old looks promising but is certainly not a first team player.
Chelsea signed Mateo Kovacic on a permanent contract. The Croatian was already registered as a Chelsea player because he was on loan from Madrid last season – that’s why his transfer does not violate the transfer ban imposed on Chelsea. Christian Pulisic, a signing made in the winter window will join his new team after the Gold Cup.
