Chelsea – Manchester United Combined XI

Gameweek 9 in the English Premier League brings us an appetizing fixture between Sarri’s undefeated Chelsea and Mourinho’s struggling Manchester United. As usual, the Overhead Kick came up with a combined eleven and Manchester United fans will not like the looks of it.

The goalkeeper is undisputably David De Gea, for his impeccable showing in the Premier League for the past few years.

The Chelsea back four of Alonso, Rudiger, Luiz and Azpilicueta all make the cut. The only United defenders worth considering for a spot were Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia, with Shaw the closest. However, Marcos Alonso’s ability on free kicks and his propensity to delivering assists and scoring put him ahead of Shaw.

With Matic providing sub-par performances and Herrera injured for most of the season so far, new boy Jorginho takes the defensive midfielder role. The ex-Napoli midfielder came in Sarri’s luggage and has been a breath of fresh air for the Londonian club.

Ngolo Kante rightfully takes the right midfield spot, a new position Sarri placed him in this season. This pick might be controversial: Paul Pogba gets the final midfield slot, playing in his preferred left side. Pogba has had his ups and downs but was intrumental in Russia and has been showing glimpses of his talent by getting United out of sticky situations recently. He also gets the nod because Kovacic, Barkly and Fred have not quite settled in.

On the wings, Eden Hazard and Willian are undoubtedly the best picks. Neither one of Martial, Rashford, Sanchez or Lingard have been able to make a spot on the wings their own in Mourinho’s team. The sporadic flash of brilliance from Martial is not enough to compensate for his frustrating inconsistency and lack of defensive discipline. Pedro would be third choice behind Hazard and Willian.

Between Lukaku, Morata, Giroud and Rashford, the Belgian has been the most impressive in the past year. Whether it was in World Cup qualifiers, in Russia or for his club, Romelu Lukaku has been bagging the goals and putting in amazing shifts. He has also shown leadership for both club and country. He has my vote for the striker position.

May the best team win!
