Uruguay defeated 10-men Russia 3-0 to take maximum points from their group stage games. Russia fought hard, cheered on by the home crowd, but ultimately Uruguay overcame them. Smolnikov’s red card in the 36th minute put the game beyond the Russians. Before that, the hosts were unlucky to concede an own goal.

In the other game of the group, Saudi Arabia beat Egypt 2-1 with a 95th minute goal. The game was meaningless as both teams had already been eliminated and were only playing for pride. Goalkeeper El-Hadary made history by being the oldest goalkeeper to ever play at a World Cup. He even saved a penalty!

Uruguay win the group, with Russia second. They will play against Group B in the knockout stages. The expectation is Spain will be first and face Russia, while Portugal will end up in second place and play against Uruguay but you never know at this World Cup! We could be in for more surprises later on today.
