Much controversy as Spain top Group B, with Portugal second

Spain drew Morocco 2-2, in a game where the Africans will feel they were let down by the referee. Gerard Pique’s two-footed tackle on Boutaib early in the game should have seen him sent off. In the other game of Group B, Portugal and Iran both benefited from very doubtful penalties, called after the referee consulted the video review. Cristiano Ronaldo missed his penalty but the Iranians did not and that goal had a direct effect on the rankings in the group.

Spain took first place very late as Iago Aspas scored in injury time to make it 2-2. The goal was first disallowed for offside but then given after a VAR review. 2-2 would not have been enough for Spain to top the group had Portugal managed to keep the score at 1-0 against Iran. However, more VAR controversy was served as the Paraguayan referee called a penalty in favor of Iran in the dying moments of the game. That goal brought Portugal down to second place.

This has been one of the tighest groups so far. All four teams have fought valiantly. Even Morocco who were already eliminated before the game played with pride and honor to affect the proceedings in the group. Our heart goes out to the Iranians who never gave up and did have chances to win this game.

Standings

  1. Spain 5 points
  2. Portugal 5 points
  3. Iran 4 points
  4. Morocco 1 point.
