Colombia bounce back; England rout Panama

Colombia stormed Poland to win 3-0 and earn their first points at Russia 2018. In their first game at the tournament, the Colombians played with 10 men for most of the game against a fast, technical Japanese team. They played well with a handicap but eventually succumbed and lost the game 2-1. That result made today’s game a must-win one and Colombia rose to the occasion.

Yerry Mina, Radamel Falcao and Juan Cuadrado were all on the scoresheet as Colombia took apart a disappointing Polish team. The latter were quite poor on the day and showed a frustrating lack of discipline defensively. The best example was on the first goal where James Rodriguez was left unmarked to cross the ball for Mina’s goal. When you leave players of this quality free to express themselves, you are inviting a whole lot of trouble towards you. Poland exits the tournament early, with Lewandowski having scored zero goals.

After their surprising wins in the first game of Group H, Japan and Senegal shared the spoils today. The Senegalese showed their physicality and twice took the lead but Japan always managed to get back in the game. At 2-1, a defensive blunder by the Senegalese defence allowed Japan to get back in the game. Japan showed their pace and technical ability against a physically impresssive team. The game ended 2-2, meaning Group H is now very tight with only Poland eliminated. Moussa Wague became the youngest African player to score at a World Cup today!

In the first game of the day, England demolished Panama 6-1. Harry Kane had a hatrick, including 2 penalties. Jesse lingard scored a peach of a goal, curling the ball with his right foot in the top right corner. John Stones scored twice, one of them coming from a perfectly executed, complicated routine from a free-kick. Panama were overwhelmed by the quality of this young English team. At half time, they were already 5-0 down. However, Panama drew the second half 1-1. The small footballing nation scored their first ever World Cup goal via Felipe Baloy. It was refreshing to see the whole Panamaian contingent celebrate this goal even when they were being thrashed 6-1. Baloy will be forever remembered as a hero in Panama.
